Extending a Student visa from inside the UK

When extensions happen and why timing matters.

By Priyanshu Goyal · 24 Sep 2026 · 1 min read · checked 22 Oct 2026

Some students extend their stay to complete a longer course or move to a new one.

Rules of thumb

  • Apply from inside the UK before your current permission ends.
  • Keep your CAS and evidence ready before you apply.
  • Check whether the new course counts as progression under the rules on gov.uk.

While you wait

Gov.uk explains what you can and cannot do while a decision is pending. Work conditions usually carry on as before.

If your plans change

Talk to your university advice team before you drop or switch a course. A late change can affect your visa.
