What is a SOC code, and why should you care before you apply?

How occupation codes sit behind every sponsored job, and how to use them to search smarter.

SOC means Standard Occupational Classification. It is a way of grouping UK jobs into numbered codes based on the work done.

Why it matters for sponsored jobs

For the Skilled Worker route, the job has to be on the Home Office list of eligible occupations. The code on your Certificate of Sponsorship decides which list entry applies and which salary rules come with it.

Who picks the code

Your employer. The sponsor assigns the code that matches the real duties of the role. You do not choose it, and you should never ask an employer to use a code that does not match the job.

How to use this as a candidate

  • Read the duties in the job description, not just the title.
  • Compare them with the official ONS descriptions for the closest codes.
  • Look the code up on the Home Office eligible occupations list and note the salary requirement.
  • Use the result to focus your search on roles that are likely to qualify.
